JCO's Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we hunt?

Our Snow Goose hunts are conducted near Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area on the Lebanon/Lancaster County border in southeast Pa and on the Finger Lakes of New York.

Our Canada Goose hunts are conducted in PA and New York
and our duck hunts are conducted in New York

How many do you shoot a day?

That depends on several things:  The weather plays a huge part in success – windy overcast days with a spit of precipitation are the best.  Bright sunny days with no wind are the worst.  The number of birds in the area, how many juvenile birds are in the flock and how well the hunters can shoot all play a role in the body count at the end of the day.

How many shells should I bring?
What shot size?

What choke should I shoot?

Two boxes of shells per hunter should be a minimum.  On a good day you will get well into your second box and may need more but there are locations close to get some quickly if needed.  Shot size and choke combinations are mostly hunter preference.  A well accepted combo is Steel BB out of a modified sleeve for geese.  You may have to tighten up a bit if they don’t want to decoy close on your hunt so bring other chokes with you if you have them.  If you want to shoot premium loads like Tungsten or Hevi Shot, you can drop your shot size down to 2 or even 4 shot.

The vast majority of the geese I have shot in the 30+ years I have hunted them have been killed with a good steel BB load.  I shoot Spectra Shot but I realize different guns like a different diet so experiment on paper before you come.

For ducks shot size 1, 2 or 3 and
sometimes 4 are preferable in steel.

What gear do I need to bring?

Gun, shells, licenses, and permits.  When hunting during the Conservation Order framework so you will need to have a CO permit!  They are free and downloadable from the Pa Game Commission website usually just after the first of the year.  You will basically need to bring what you need to be comfortable and, at least, plan for wet, muddy conditions.  Have 2 hats – a ball cap style and a fleece beanie style. A good pair of binoculars are a good idea and cameras and/or video equipment should be available should you decide to go to the refuge at some point to see the show.
It is also a good idea to bring a seat cushion should you hunt in whites instead of layout blinds.
All blinds and decoys are provided.
For our New York duck hunts it is best to coordinate
directly with the guide to determine what
gear you will need to bring.

Where do I stay?

We have worked with The Four Seasons Motel for years for our PA Snow Goose hunts.  It is nothing fancy but it is clean and convenient to the morning meeting place.  If you book there and tell them you are clients of James Creek Outfitters, you will get a discount on the room(s).  It is also easy to find: 3 miles North on Pa route 72 from Exit 266 of the Pa Turnpike.  There are other motels in the area as well if you can’t get a room there and JCO can get you that info at booking time.  Our staff stays at The Four Seasons so it makes it nice to hook up with your guide the night before the hunt.
If hunting New York please coordinate directly with your guide for lodging information.

What do we do for lunch?

Usually the birds will take a break at mid-day and you can sneak out
and get some chow and swing through the refuge for an adrenaline boost!
BUT there are days when the birds are jammin’ at mid-day and you don’t
want to leave the field.
That being said, you should at least take some lunch
with you to get you by until after the hunt in case you don’t get to take that lunch break.
Quite frankly, you are the paying customers so the guides let it up to you as to lunch arrangements.

How long do we hunt?

All Snow Goose hunts (PA & NY) are $150.00 and you will hunt until noon.
(1:00 after time change in the spring).

New York fall and winter duck and goose hunts are $175.00 till noon.

Hunters may opt to hunt until the end of the day
for an additional $75.00 per hunter.
That decision can be made "up front" or
be determined on the day of the hunt
based on bird movements, weather, travel time etc.

Do the guides shoot too?

The guides shoot along with the clients on larger flocks and/or
shoot “back-up” after calling the shot.

They are instructed to let the clients have at the smaller bunches first.

How do I book a hunt?

Deposits are required in advance to secure your dates of your hunt.

Deposit amounts are based on number of
hunters per
day of hunting.
Deposits can be paid by check or money order.
We do NOT take credit cards.
If a hunter does not show for the hunt,
that deposit MAY NOT be used by
another hunter to reduce the amount owed.
The unused deposit is forfeited.
Dates are picked based on the number of days booked then based on who deposits first, second, third and so on.

Further deposit information can be obtained when
calling or emailing to book a hunt.

What is the cancellation policy?

If a party cancels a hunt more than 60 days out,
the deposit will be returned in full.
  If the cancellation occurs
between 30 and 60 days from the date of the scheduled hunt,
50% of the deposit will be returned.

Inside of 30 days, the deposit will be forfeited.

If JCO cancels a hunt it will more than likely be to your benefit.
WE WILL NOT TAKE YOU IF WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH
BIRDS TO MAKE IT WORTH THE MONEY YOU PAID US!

Acts of nature ie: a late snowstorm that moves birds
out of the area, a fast warm-up that sends the birds
north etc. can ruin the best laid plans.

Anything like this that happens that is not the fault of James Creek Outfitters will put your hunt into, what we call, “rollover” status.
This means that your hunt will be rolled over to the next
season and therefore put you very high in the date pick list
once we start “hard dating” for the next season.

On the exceptionally rare occasion JCO cannot accommodate you (such as family emergencies etc) and the fault is ours, you will be given the option of having your deposit sent back, rolling over or rebooking to another date if the schedule allows.

How much should I tip my guide?

I’m never quite sure how to answer this one so I usually say this:
Tip as much as you are comfortable with and, please,
by all means, don’t tip the birds or the weather – tip the guide.

I have hand-picked these guys from all over Pa because
of their work ethic, knowledge and courteous attitudes.
They will give you their best and if you feel otherwise,
I’d like to know about it.

Can I bring my dog?

This is up to the individual guide you would be assigned to.
Some will work their own dogs.
The guide has the final say on if your dog is welcome.

Are there bird cleaning services?

We do not offer cleaning of your kill but
normally will assist in the process with you.

I hope I was able to answer many of your questions.
